The Palli Siksha Bhavana is functioning since 1963 to offer graduation in Agriculture. Plant Pathology and Agricultural Entomology, two important sections of Plant Protection were taught in the Department of Plant Protection, established in 1989. Earlier these two major sections were functioning since 1965 under the Department of Agriculture, Palli Siksha Sadana. However, M.Sc.(Ag) in Plant Protection with specialization in Plant Pathology and Agril. Entomology was offered since 1987.The Department continued to offer resident instruction programme in Plant Pathology comprises undergraduate instruction for the students of Palli Siksha Bhavana and postgraduate instruction leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Protection with specialization in Plant Pathology. From the inception, the unit of Plant Pathology has excelled in the dimension of research, teaching and extension activities. Many projects of CSIR, ICAR, UGC; Food Processing, ICPR were successfully completed by the faculties of Plant Pathology. Studentsof B.Sc. (Ag.) Hons. (Elective in Plant pathology), and M.Sc.(Ag.) specialization in Plant Pathology are well established in reputed national and international organizations. Many informative text books relating to Plant Pathology, Post harvest Pathology, Diseases of crops have been published from Plant Pathology section of erstwhile Plant Protection Department. The Department successfully organised National and International conferences and seminars and visited many countries for sharing scientific knowledge and presentation of research papers. The faculties also achieved numbers of prestigious awards from different National and International organizations.
Recently, Plant Protection programme has been bifurcated to offer independent PG programme in M.Sc.(Ag) in Plant Pathology in the year 2017. In 2019 formation of the Department of Plant Pathology has been resolved in the Executive Council of Visva-Bharati with a view to impart recent knowledge in the field of Plant Pathology to the students, farmers and other stakeholders of the society. Credit based Semester system has been incorporated for UG, PG & Ph.D. students in order to make the course curriculum system more flexible. It periodically updates its syllabi according to UGC and ICAR guidelines to incorporate emerging trends of the respective subject. The Department also caters the problem oriented research programme and extension activities. Besides, the Department has a well-equipped experiential learning unit of Mushroom Technology that helps the learners in overall development of mushroom cultivation as well as provides an opportunity to establish themselves as mushroom producers and entrepreneurs.
